I’m Michael Janik, a 19 year old university student and artist based out of Toronto and Kingston, Ontario. I try to maintain a journalistic approach to my photography, documenting unique subjects and intriguing events, pushing myself in close to the subject to capture a mix of expression and context. I see immense beauty in the intimate gestures individuals make when they’re engrossed in their worlds; street photography allows me to capture a glimpse into the personal worlds of the people we pass by every day. I work passionately on my craft and am constantly trying to evoke an emotional connection and response to my work.
Onwards / This man stepped out into the middle of Queen St. in downtown Toronto, disregarding all traffic, and stared onwards as a nearby clock tower rang to mark the hour. I’m unsure whether he’s shielding his eyes from the sun or saluting.
Wind Storm / We had incredibly strong winds over a couple weeks in October and I couldn’t resist taking a few photos like this. The girl photographed turned out to be a friend from elementary school that I hadn’t spoken to in 6 years; I only noticed after she called my name out once I put my camera down.
Performer / I’ve always been enamored by the downtown street performers. They’re always out hustling for change, but I’ve always thought they lived somewhat famous lives. They art and their performances become recognized as they return to their spot day after day, and they always draw applause from the nearby crowds.
The Lady in Red / This is arguably my favourite photo to date, and I’m still not sure what it exactly is that draws me into this shot. Maybe it’s how bold of a red her coat is; maybe it’s how concentrated she is on her book; maybe it’s the contrast between her moment of peace and the hubbub on the field ahead of her. I think it really captures the essence of street photography.

I am 38 years old and live in Treviso. After much experience in the restoration industry (Milan-Venice, 1993-1997), I felt the need to explore my passion for art, starting from all that is day-to-day chores and ephemeral facts of life.
My aspiration is to let things come to surface through art, i.e. the joy of transformation. Joy is in change; it’s right at the moment when we perceive this transformation that we become aware of the value of our own life. The challenge is in being able to do it: trying again and again is my constant struggle.
Shaina Craft graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2011 with a BFA in painting. She currently lives and works in Philadelphia, PA. Her work is primarily figurative and her obsession with the human form makes sure she never strays far from her favorite subject. Her large oil paintings are glazed with many layers of sheer color, creating a luminous effect. In addition to oil, she works in chalk pastel and digital photography.
Adrien Patout is a self-taught painter and fashion illustrator, currently living in Paris.
My works evolve mostly around portraiture, flesh and bodies setups (fashion, tattoo/piercing, nudity/intimacy…).
My main interest is the human body and how people deal with it (piercing, tattoos, esthetical surgery, haircuts, fashion,…). It’s about life, death, love or sex…and how the body, as a media, feels the gap between our inner feelings and the outside world.

Squarepusher × Z-MACHINES
In 2013, a team of Japanese roboticists was assembled with the challenge of creating a music-performing system that was beyond the capabilities of the most advanced musicians - Z-Machines were the result. The roboticist’s musical producer, Kenjiro Matsuo, and his team, invited a number of Japanese composers as well as Squarepusher to develop music specifically for the project.
The opportunity to explore the compositional possibilities of a guitarist with 78 fingers and a drummer with 22 arms was a temptation impossible to ignore. The resulting ‘Sad Robots Goes Funny’ was a poignant and highly praised piece, composed and produced by Squarepusher and performed by Z-Machines. The video produced by award winning director, Daito Manabe, can be seen above.
The rapport that developed between Squarepusher and the Japanese team led to a lingering feeling that the project still had unexplored potential. Squarepusher approached Matsuo-san with a view to further investigating the possibilities of the collaboration. This led to additional pieces being created, involving an intense four weeks of composing, then two more months of transferring and adapting data, various technical hurdles and the eventual recording of ‘Music For Robots’.

“In this project the main question I’ve tried to answer is ‘can these robots play music that is emotionally engaging?’
I have long admired the player piano works of Conlon Nancarrow and Gyorgy Ligeti. Part of the appeal of that music has to do with hearing a familiar instrument being ‘played’ in an unfamiliar fashion. For me there has always been something fascinating about the encounter of the unfamiliar with the familiar. I have long been an advocate of taking fresh approaches to existing instrumentation as much as I am an advocate of trying to develop new instruments, and being able to rethink the way in which, for example, an electric guitar can be used is very exciting.
Each of the robotic devices involved in the performance of this music has its own specification which permits certain possibilities and excludes others - the robot guitar player for example can play much faster than a human ever could, but there is no amplitude control. In the same way that you do when you write music for a human performer, these attributes have to be borne in mind - and a particular range of musical possibilities corresponds to those attributes. Consequently, in this project familiar instruments are used in ways which till now have been impossible.”
“Age ain’t nothing but a number” is a credo artist Jason Bard Yarmosky lives by. The 26-year-old Poughkeepsie, NY born oil painter has been making waves with his series of hauntingly beautiful paintings of his aging grandparents.
In his new series, “Dream of the Soft Look,” Jason takes a more intimate approach, with black and white close ups, mixed imagery
Dream of the Soft Look, continues my exploration of the human life cycle. Building on my earlier work in the Elder Kinder series, these new paintings invite the viewer into intimate moments of truth, many of which are reflected in the model’s gaze in a mirror.
The resulting view sparks an external/internal conversation filled with moments of bewilderment, frustration, humor, and wonder as the aged body is reflected back at the still vibrant soul, dreaming of the soft look.
These new works explore the tension between the physical and psychological elements of aging. However the show also has much to do with memory, and its enduring role throughout the life cycle. My black-and-white paintings reflect the “realness” of now. They are the mirror of the present, while the “idealized” memory, often colored over time, is presented in myriad pigments.
Ukrainian artistic photographer from Kiev Oleg Oprisco creates portraits that I consider truly exceptional – each image has its own atmosphere, and calls on each sense to awaken and become a part of his work. Tones, composition, subject, and emotion all come together in a harmonious way thanks to Oleg’s ingenious mind – he has a true signature style that you instantly recognize as being an Oprisco.
